At first it was radio being talked about everyone sounded excited and were happy to listen to a small box like thing, which could sing, relay news and even give comments on live cricket matches. From 2000 to 2007, the world of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore in the town of Stars Hollow, Conn., captivated the imagination of television viewers. ‘Gilmore Girls‘ started on the WB, ended on the CW, and today lives on in syndication and DVD as one of the most charming, whimsical and poignant shows about family relations.

The reruns every weekend on SoapNet have also shown how many wonderful performers were part of ‘Gilmore Girls,’ and how many have gone on to continued success in other television programs. Here’s a round up of the stars and where you can see them now:

Alexis Bledel: Growing up on television isn’t always kind, but few did it as effortlessly as Alexis. She was the quintessential overachiever as Rory. Even before the show ended, Bledel was branching out with movies like ‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’ and ‘Tuck Everlasting.’ In 2009, she did a short stint as Dr. Julia Wise on ‘ER,’ and is continuing to pursue a film career.

Lauren Graham: As hot mom Lorelai, Lauren Graham was a screwball comic heroine in the tradition of Rosalind Russell, talking fast while showing depth and vulnerability. Since the show wrapped, Graham appeared in a few films that failed to live up to her talents, like ‘Because I Said So’ and ‘Flash of Genius.’ She stepped in for Maura Tierney in NBC’s ‘Parenthood’ and has been wonderful as screwed-up single mom Sarah Braverman. Do we smell an Emmy?

Melissa McCarthy: She was Lorelai’s best friend, Sookie, then went on to be Samantha’s best friend Dena on ‘Samantha Who?‘ but in her new CBS sitcom ‘Mike and Molly,’ McCarthy steps out from the sidekick role to be the star of the show. The new fall comedy from ‘Two and a Half Men’ and ‘Big Bang Theory’ mastermind Chuck Lorre has all the earmarks of a hit.

Scott Paterson: On ‘Gilmore Girls,’ Paterson was sensitive macho man Luke Danes. He appeared during the show’s entire run and since the end the series, he’s been in two shows — ‘Aliens in America‘ and ‘90210‘ — as well as reprising his role as Agent Strahm in the ‘Saw’ films. This fall, he’ll star on the mysterious, action-packed new NBC fall series, ‘The Event.’

Kelly Bishop: The ultimate ‘Gilmore Girl’ was really Emily, Lorelai’s mother. As played by Kelly Bishop she was an imposing presence. In the years since the end of the show, Bishop’s appeared on both ‘Law & Order: SVU’ and ‘Mercy’ in multiple-episode arcs.

Edward Hermann Like Kelly Bishop, Edward Hermann brought dignity and authority to his role as family patriarch Richard Gilmore, not to mention great humor and class. He works constantly and appeared on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ as Dr. Norman Shales, and more recently on ‘Law & Order: SVU.’


Matt Czuchry: For the last three years of ‘Glimore Girls,’ Czuchry played the man in Rory’s life — Logan Huntzberger, , a spoiled newspaper heir more interested in fun that his future. After a brief turn on ‘Friday Night Lights’ as a Christian radio host, Czuchry emerged this past season as Cary on ‘The Good Wife.’ Despite his character being fired at the end of the season, he will continue on the show as Alicia’s adversary in the state attorney’s office.

Milo Ventimiglia: Most people know him best as Peter Petrelli on ‘Heroes,’ but his first claim to fame was as bad boy Jess on ‘Gilmore Girls.’ The WB tried to spin off the character, but if didn’t click. However, Ventimiglia was really on target as the power-absorbing Peter on ‘Heroes,’ even when his character veered from good to bad and back again. Also while doing ‘Heroes,’ the actor played Rocky’s son in the last of Sylvester Stallone’s franchise, ‘Rocky Balboa.’

Jared Padelecki: As Dean on ‘Gilmore Girls,’ Padelecki spent 63 episodes chasing Rory, catching her and then losing her in the midst of her transition to Yale and his doomed high school marriage. He was a star on the rise and CW paired him with Jensen Ackles in the sci-fi series ‘Supernatural.’ The combo worked perfectly and as brothers, they’re both still thriving on the show, which is going into its sixth season.

Keiko Agena: As much as Rory grew in the years ‘Gilmore Girls’ was on the air, so did her best friend, Lane Kim. Like Bledel, Agena was on ‘ER’ and more recently guested on ‘Private Practice’ and ‘Castle.’

Sean Gunn: Character in Stars Hollow like Kirk added to the charm of ‘Gilmore Girls.’ Gunn was endearingly annoying as the town nuisance. Currently, Sean’s been all over TV as the commercial pitch man for KGB. Here’s one of his ads:

Few shows have earned as much real estate in my heart as the wonderful WB/CW sitcom Gilmore Girls. Maybe it’s the pretentious pop culture devourer in me. Or the hopeless romantic who always wished (and still does) that Rory would ditch Dean and Logan and run off into the sunset with her One True Love, Jess. (Sorry, are you on Team Dean? I will fight you. Team Jess forever!) No show has had as much love for its smart, sassy women, or packed as many caffeine-fueled zingers and indie rock cameos into the span of an hour, than this lovely small town fantasy set in Stars Hollow, CT.

And yet, despite my overwhelming love for Gilmore Girls, I had major issues with the last few seasons. To be honest, I didn’t watch the final episode simply out of spite. But apparently I’m not alone; show creator Amy Sherman-Palladino hasn’t watched the entire last season! Major burn!

Sherman-Palladino, who left the show in 2006 along with her husband and fellow producer, Daniel Palladino, revealed her lost hopes for Rory and Lorelai Gilmore in a recent interview with EW’s Michael Ausiello (who, incidentally, should be commended for continuing to wage a fact-finding mission into the defunct series even years after it ended). While Sherman-Palladino would only say that she “wanted different things for Rory,” she explained that she’s keeping her intended arcs for Rory and Co. secret for a very good reason: “If there is a movie in the making, I’m going to be basically delving back into where I left off.”

That’s right. We’re talking about a Gilmore Girls movie.

If Gilmore Girls: The Movie becomes a possibility, I’m all for Sherman-Palladino giving us a more satisfying coda than Rory choosing between Logan’s proposal and having her own career, and Lorelai bouncing between her ex and the man who serves her coffee. These are not the kind of paths I wanted them to follow, either. I’d wager die-hard Gilmore fans might agree.

And then there’s the issue of TV-to-film adaptations that don’t always work. Borat? Great. Sex and the City? Shallow. But for Gilmore Girls, I’d be willing to put my reservations aside – and goodness knows Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel have struggled to find anything better since the show ended. Milo Ventimiglia, on the other hand… well, he’ll just have to take a break from Heroes, because a Gilmore Girls movie without Jess would be no Gilmore Girls movie at all.

When we last heard of Alexis Bledels’ (Rory on Gilmore Girls) whereabouts, she was filming “The Conspirator” in Savannah, Georgia much to the excitement of the locals. However, this past weekend, Alexis traded in her period piece dresses for a much chic-er look as she made her way to New York City for several very fun events. In the below photo, she’s at the Alice and Olivia pop-up store opening at fancy boutique SCOOP.

That same night, she went to the WIRED pop-up party, where Jared Eng (aka “Just Jared”) tweeted she thought the music Moby was spinning was “too aggressive”. If that wasn’t enough, on that same night Alexis was photographed on the red carpet at the 25th anniversary of Indochine. Finally, lest you think she took a break, Alexis was spotted heading into the next night’s SNL taping with Gilmore Girls co-star Krysten Ritter!

Way back at the beginning of the year, Arieanna reported that Lauren Graham had a new sitcom in development with NBC called “Let It Go.” Sadly, that pilot never made it to the schedule and the project was scrapped. The Futon Critic is currently doing a series of posts centered around pilots that did not get picked up and started off with Lauren’s sitcom.

As Arienna mentioned, the show featured Lauren as a self-help guru (her mantra is “let it go”) who quits her popular TV show and has to start her life over.  The folks over at Futon Critic apparently got a chance to watch the pilot (actually, this isn’t clear, but I’m going to say they did) and says, quite frankly, the show was awful and made Lauren into an utterly unlikeable character. That’s really too bad that the show’s pilot tanked; it had some seriously big comedy chops behnd it including Arrested Development’s Mitch Hurwitz as executive producer and fellow Arrested Development alum Jeffrey Tambor as Lauren’s manager.

Thankfully Lauren has a new film she is set to start shooting next month (“It’s Kind Of A Funny Story“) and of course, her new role in NBC’s Parenthood. While it’ll be great to get Lauren back on television, it’s really too bad it won’t be in a comedic role. She’s quite funny and it would’ve been nice to have seen her work those talents.

While she’s done some press lately on the Ellen DeGeneres and Craig Ferguson shows, Lauren Graham (Lorelai on Gilmore Girls) hasn’t said much on her return to our television sets in the upcoming drama Parenthood. That might be because she has yet to shoot any scenes as Sarah Braverman, the single mom she will portray on the show, replacing original cast member Maura Tierney. In an interview with TV Guide, Lauren reveals more about her new character:

She’s really down and out, and kind of in a place that would be a very difficult adult place to be, which is really running out of options. What I connected to is the beauty about that writing. It’s really strong, really elegant, and kind of economical. And she’s a single mom, but the world of the show didn’t remind me of anything that’s on, or that I’d done. It just felt like shows that I loved growing up, like thirtysomething, where it’s not a soap opera, it’s not a melodrama. It’s just a relationship story. I do think there’s a lot of places to go, because she’s moving back to her hometown, she doesn’t have a job, she’s going to reconnect with old friends. And that’s some of the things you look at on a TV show too, like, are you always going to be telling the same story? And this felt like, “Ooh, it could go a lot of neat places.” But really, I’ve had all kinds of different experiences of trying to find the next TV thing, and I just met a writer who I feel will write for me. That’s all you want.

Running out of options is kind of similar to how we first met Lorelai Gilmore, right? Desperate to give her daughter opportunity and going back to her parents after being distant for years. While some of the themes may be similar, Lauren said Sarah Braverman doesn’t share Lorelai’s unique speech patterns, because, who does?

No. Nothing will ever be that, in the best possible way. That was so unique, you know? And that’s been the problem actually – finding something that I connect to that has its own voice. This, to me, was that. I love the relationships and how complicated they are. It’s very grown up, the show.

Parenthood shoots its second pilot in a few weeks and should be on the air next year.
